Green Wheel Certified Businesses

The Green Wheel Certification Program

  • This is a designation given to businesses, organizations, and community groups within Port Angeles, WA to show that they are working to divert and mitigate organics waste in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, localize their waste stream, and increase their overall sustainability.

  • The City of Port Angeles has partnered with SisterLand Farms and its not-for-profit Wagon Wheel Fund to offer this service free of charge.

SisterLand Farms is responsible for processing applications, reviewing reports, and awarding the certification to businesses and organizations that qualify.

  • To qualify, an entity must make efforts to reduce the amount of readily compostable waste intermingled in its trash and recycling.

Certified businesses, organizations, and community groups are responsible for submitting annual waste stream reports via email, and agree to one hour of online training (by relevant management or leadership) each year.

  • If the certified entity reports a decrease in the proportion of organics waste diverted and sustainably managed for two consecutive years, managers of the certification will request additional trainings, or ask to revisit initial waste stream goals.

Failure to report, or failure to meet certification standards could result in a loss of the cetification.

  • Certified entities will record weight samples of both trash and diverted organics materials in accordance with a plan developed prior to certification and following a brief training.

These samples may be subject to an inspection to better improve our outreach and shape the awarded entity’s long term plan.

We estimate that reporting will take no more than three hours per year, and waste surveys no more than 15 minutes per quarter.

  • Support participating businesses when you can.

Encourage other businesses and organizations to pursue a certification.
